Discover the lovely mountain scenery of the Andes, the colourful Indian markets and colonial towns of the highlands.
Itinerary
Day 1 (Tue): Nationalpark Cotopaxi
Today we visit the Cotopaxi National Park. We arrive at the elevated plateau of Limpiopungo (3.830 m) and walk along the Andean uplands. In the late afternoon, we arrive in Patate and spend the night at the Hacienda Leito, embedded in a marvelous green mountainous landscape and with a splendid view on the active volcano Tungurahua (5.016 m). Day 2 (Wed): Pastaza Canyon - Baños
We pass through the famous Pastaza-Canyon along cavernous gorges and numerous waterfalls to Rio Verde. We walk to the thunderous waterfall “Pailón del Diablo” and continue our journey to Baños, situated at the foot of the active volcano Tungurahua (5.016 m) and known for its hot springs. Accommodation either Hotel Volcano in Baños or Hacienda Leito. (B/-/-)
Day 3 (Thu): Guamote Market - Nationalpark Chimborazo - Riobamba
After visiting the colorful indigeous market of Guamote we continue our journey to Ecuadaor´s hightest volcano Chimborazo (6.310 m). We walk across a desert-like territory and hike to the Eward Whymper refuge up to 5.000 m. You may even see some Vicuñas on your way. We drive on to Riobamba and stay at the Hostería Abraspungo. Day 4 (Fri): Train to the Devil’s nose – Ingapirca - Cuenca
Today, you embark on the most thrilling train ride in all of South America. Through captivating scenery, the train makes its way to the Devil’s Nose, a rock face that is several hundred feet tall and requires the train to zigzag carefully up the mountain. Our journey continues to Ecuador´s biggest Inca ruins, Ingapirca and finally ends in Cuenca, where you spend the night at the Hotel Santa Lucia in the Old Town. (B/-/-)
Day 5 (Sat): Cuenca – Nacional Park Cajas - Guayaquil.
Today you visit the old town of Cuenca, put under preservation order by the UNESCO in 1999. Our tour comprises the waterfront along the Tomebamba River, the impressive Cathedrals, the colorful flower market and a visit at the local pánama hat factory. Afterwards, you visit El Cajas, the national recreation area with over 230 lakes. Passing through different climate and vegetation zones along your way, you finally reach the vibrant seaport Guayaquil. (B/-/-)
Please note: The journey can also start on Sundays or Thursdays, but then without the Market in Guamote.
